A Definitive Garmin Approach X10 Review
The simple, intuitive Garmin Approach X10 GPS golf watch loves being on the golf course as much as you do. And with its sleek design you can be sure to look smart in the clubhouse too.
Welcome. My name is Ian Allen and as part of my quest to find the best golf GPS watches, my article today will be reviewing the smart looking Garmin Approach X10 Golf GPS Watch. So lets start.
So why buy a Garmin Golf GPS Watch?
That’s a great question.
Have you ever found yourself on the Tee and wondering how far that hazard is? Or you’re standing on the fairway and can’t quite get comfortable guessing the carry distance. Yep, that was me too.
When playing a new course, I would always grab a course guide. You know the ones, the nicely bound little booklets with the different yardages to hazards and greens, as well as the ‘Pro Tips’ on how best to play the hole.
But, I don’t play golf like a professional. My tee shots are not always arrow straight and my approaches not always the right distance. So whilst I used to enjoy carrying the golf course guides around, more often than not, I would generally find myself playing my shot from where there was no distance indicated.
But all that is behind me with the invention of the Golf GPS Watch by Garmin Golf.
My Review of the Garmin Approach X10 Golf GPS Watch
The Garmin Approach X10 Golf GPS watch is the starting model of the Garmin Approach watch range. It’s simple and elegant design means that it isn’t out of place on your wrist whether you’re on the course at the weekend, or out and about during the week.
The design is more like a fitness band, presumably building on the success of the Garmin X40. It’s thin and unisex look is bound to appeal to golfers of all ages and sex’s.
Sure, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles like it’s big brothers such as the Garmin Approach S60 Golf GPS Watch, yet it is a true go-anywhere golfing partner. Even if you’ve never played the course before, no matter where your last shot takes you, it knows where you are, and how far you are from the pin.
Garmin Approach X10 Features
Weighing in at just 31 grams, a little less than your golf ball, the Garmin X10 is light and comfortable on your wrist. It has a an excellent battery life from its onboard lithium-ion battery. In GPS mode, this battery will last long enough for upto 72 holes of golf, whilst in watch mode, that time is stretched to up to 23 days.
Whilst in watch mode you have the benefit of time and date functions, automatic adjustments to daylight savings time, and believe it or not, sunrise and sunset times too. For a watch that has a display size of 25.4mm x 10.7mm, that’s a lot of information!
As with the range of Garmin Golf GPS devices, the Approach X10 comes with 41,000 preloaded courses worldwide. In addition to this, within the purchase price all course updates and additions are free using Garmin Express. That’s right, no setup charges, fees or subscriptions needed. Your Garmin Approach X10 is ready to go straight out of the box.
What’s the Approach X10 Like on the Course?
Using it’s high-sensitivity GPS receiver, the Approach X10 gives you the distance data you need to fire away your shots with real confidence.
It’s clear touchscreen display will accurately show distances to front, middle and back of the greens. Plus in Green View, the Garmin X10 will show you the true shape of the green, even if you’re behind it. Also with manual pin placement technology, you can set the pins to today’s locations to be even more up to date than your playing partners.
In addition to the green distances, the Garmin X10 will also provide you yardages to layups and doglegs. Plus it will also give you your shot distances from anywhere on the golf course.
Does the Approach X10 Track Your Statistics?
Yes it does.
In addition to the yardages and distances described above, the Garmin X10 Golf GPS will track your shots. This includes strokes, putts per round, fairways in regulation and greens in regulation. So you can see if your new Callaway rogue Driver, or Scotty Cameron Putter are really improving your game. All of your golf statistics can be accessed and viewed with Garmin’s online software.
And if these stats are not enough to satisfy your geeky qualities, then the Garmin X10 will also record your round time and has an odometer too!
To add another level of fun and competition, the Approach X10 is one of the many Garmin golf watches compatible with the new Garmin Golf app that lets users compete in weekly leaderboards on any golf course. This free app allows users to compete against friends and fellow golfers on the same course, plus view another player’s rank, score, handicap and more.
Players can use this app to set up their own tournament event and invite multiple friends to compete. Users can input their score manually in the app, or upload their scorecard from the Approach X10 using Garmin Express and view it in the Garmin Golf app.
Is the Garmin Approach X10 Waterproof?
Yes it is. Even though the Approach X10 is small, it is still strong enough to survive a drop in the lake upto 50 meters deep, thats 5 atmospheres for the intelligent people among us.
So you don’t have to be afraid of falling in when you’re reaching for your new Titleist Pro V1X that you’ve just shanked into the lake on that tricky Par 3!

So What Did I Think of the Garmin Approach X10?
As I have said before in the review of the Garmin Approach G10 Clip-on Golf GPS, I don’t really like wearing watches. I usually find them bulky and uncomfortable. Yet with the Garmin X10 I found its compact design and slim size very comfortable and unobtrusive.
As it’s a watch, I could also slip it around the handle of my Motorcaddy S7 Pro trolley. This made it just as convenient as when it was on my wrist, so a win win for me really.
Like all Garmin Golf products, the Approach X10 is really well made and has that feeling of durability about it. The strap is made from a TPU material, a mixture of hard plastic and soft silicone. This gives it a very dense and smooth rubbery feel which is extremely durable and bound to give years of service to anyone who buys it.
All in all if you want an entry level Golf GPS device, that’s reliable and robust, I would definitely give the Garmin Approach X10 a test drive on your local fairways.
