Welcome to my Definitive Review of the Garmin Approach S62
So let’s Tee Off!
So why buy a Garmin Golf GPS Watch?
That’s a great question.
Have you ever found yourself on the Tee and wondering how far that hazard is? Or you’re standing on the fairway and can’t quite get comfortable guessing the carry distance. Yep, that was me too.
When playing a new course, I would always grab a course guide. You know the ones, the nicely bound little booklets with the different yardages to hazards and greens, as well as the ‘Pro Tips’ on how best to play the hole.
But, I don’t play golf like a professional despite practising as often as I can (Click here to read my practice guides). My tee shots are not always arrow straight and my approaches aren’t always the right distance. So whilst I used to enjoy carrying the course guides around, more often than not I would generally find myself playing my shot from where there was no distance indicated.
But all that is behind me with the invention of the Golf GPS Watch by Garmin Golf.
My Review of the Garmin Approach S62 Golf GPS Watch
If yu have never read my article on Better Course Management. The new Garmin Approach S62 Golf Watch is packed full of functions to help you play better golf on the course. In fact it’s so good the only thing it doesn’t do is hit the golf ball for you.
Garmin S62 is so stylish
First impressions when you see the Garmin S62 is that the styling of it is so cool.
I love the larger display as it makes it easier to use and it shows you more of the golf course. And at just 61g in weight, the new Garmin Approach S62 gives you a quality, robust feel without it being too heavy.
The glass is made from modern ‘Gorilla’ glass, so accidental breakages and cracks should be a thing of the past. And for me, I love this new polished ceramic bezel.
I think the Garmin S62 not only looks smart on the golf course, but with the ‘Quickfit’ watch band, you can easily change the straps so it fits every occasion.
Garmin Approach S62 Features
Weighing in at just 61g, a little less than two golf balls, the S62 gives a quality feel without being too heavy during your round.
At just 47mm in diameter and only 15mm thick, the S62 still packs a huge 33mm diameter display behind it’s protective screen.
It has an excellent battery too. In GPS mode, the S62 will last long enough fro almost 100 holes of golf. That’s right, the battery will last upto 20 hours. And in Smartwatch mode you can expect to get 14days between charges.
As with the range of Garmin Golf GPS devices, the Approach S62 comes with 41,000 preloaded courses worldwide. In addition to this, within the purchase price all course updates and additions are free using Garmin Express. That’s right, no setup charges, fees or subscriptions needed. Your Garmin Approach S62 is ready to go straight out of the box.
As you would expect from Garmin, the Approach S62 has a list of features as long as the proverbial arm. To see the full list of features including Health Monitoring, Fitness Tracking, training & analysis features and golfing features; check out this link
What’s the Approach S62 like on the Golf Course?
Without a doubt, the S62 has every bell and whistle you will ever need from a golf watch. Yet the function on the Garmin approach S62, which I honestly believe is going to help every golfer right around the world play better golf, is the ‘Virtual Caddie’.
After five rounds of golf wearing the S62, the watch learns how you play golf, how far you hit your clubs, and then it’ll give you recommendations of how to play certain holes.
On one hole I found myself slightly out of position. I’ve hit my tee shot and I’m now going to hit my second shot into the green. Now using virtual caddy it’s telling me I have 210 yards to the flag and it’s recommending I hit my 4 hybrid.
What’s also really clever is it’s telling me that the wind direction too, using the wind information via the Garmin App.
I just love the fact you’ve got a voice of reason on your wrist, because sometimes golfers, we need just that.
After a few holes I came round to the halfway house and even here the Garmin is full of features. Because what’s great now with the S62 is that you can actually pay through the watch using Garmin Pay.
So even though my wallet is in my golf bag outside, I can order halfway treats, my skinny latte and pay contentless just using the watch.
Is the Garmin Approach S62 Waterproof?
Yes it is. Even though the Approach S62 is packed full of more features than you can shake a wedge at, it is strong enough to survive a drop in the lake upto 50 meters deep, that’s 5 atmospheres for the intelligent people among us. And yes I had to look that one up.
So you don’t have to be afraid of falling in when you’re reaching for your new Titleist Pro V1X that you’ve just shanked into the lake on that tricky Par 3!
So What Did I Think of the Garmin Approach S62?
As I have said before in the review of the Garmin Approach G10 Clip-on Golf GPS, I don’t really like wearing watches. I usually find them bulky and uncomfortable. And whilst the S62 is not as small as the Garmin X10 I found its design and size very comfortable and less obtrusive than I imagined.
As it’s a watch, I could also slip it around the handle of my Motorcaddy S7 Pro trolley. This made it just as convenient as when it was on my wrist, so a win win for me really.
Like all Garmin Golf products, the Approach S62 is really well made and has that feeling of durability about it.
All in all if you want a top end, high class, feature packed Golf GPS device, that’s reliable and robust, I would definitely give the Garmin Approach S62 a test drive on your local fairways.
