Look Smart, Get Smart | Garmin Approach S60 Golf Watch Review
The Garmin Approach S60, is Garmin’s premium addition to their range of high quality GPS watches. This luxury timepiece, with GPS golf technology, is sure to give you the style and features that reflect your passion for the game, both on and off the course.
Now like many an average golfer, regardless of whether I can hit the ball a specific distance or not, I do like to know how far I am from the flag, or, how far I have to carry the hazard that’s in front of me. I also like to be stylish whilst playing my favourite sport, after all, we may not play like a professional, but at least we can look like one.
The Garmin Approach S60, easily satisfies those two important requirements. Brimming with some cool and impressive features, that will make you the envy of all your playing partners, the Garmin Approach S60, follows on from their successful Garmin Approach S20 and the Garmin Approach X40 which I review here.
What are our first impressions?
When the high quality box arrived in the office, you could immediately tell that you are going to be treated to something of equal quality to an Apple product. Included in the box is your choice of watch, a charging and data transfer cable, plus all the relevant documentation and warranty information.
Available in Black or White, and with either a colour matched silicone or black leather strap, both versions have a gorgeous, high end, ceramic satin black bezel, which surrounds the large, 1.2” sunlight readable colour touchscreen display. This clear display presents an all intuitive and streamlined user interface which shows the wearer an array of useful information from more than 40,000 preloaded courses from around the world.
Both functional and stylish, this new rendition of Garmin’s sports watch is the most advanced on the market, and it’s features will impress you both on, and off the course.
Garmin Approach S60 GPS Golf Watch Review – Is it the best golfing watch?
The Garmin Approach S60 is the company’s most feature-packed watch to date and provides you with everything you need to know about the golf course you’re playing. This GPS smartwatch has auto course detection and auto hole transition, to accurately show you yardages to greens, hazards and doglegs. It also offers automatic downloads of course updates when synced with Garmin Connect, for those of us who play most often.
The Approach S60 takes your golfing game to a whole new level. With a simple swing of the wrist, this sleek watch is without a doubt, one of the best on the market.
Easy to Use
There’s no doubt that the large 1.2” colour display makes for easy operation of the Approach S60.
In addition to helping you improve your golf score, it will also provide information on step, calorie, distance and has a sleep tracker, to ensure that avid golfers and fitness fanatics alike can wear this watch both day and night. Unfortunately this extensive list of features, doesn’t extend to a heart rate monitor, yet, when connected to a compatible device, you are able to receive messages etc should you choose to.
Keeping track and keeping score
The Approach S60 will automatically detect your course and has auto hole transition. Plus with enhanced AutoShot game tracking, the watch will automatically track shots along the fairway and records shot distances for post game analysis using Garmin Connect.
Get precise distances to each green on the course, including hazards and doglegs, as well as ‘PlaysLike Distance’. This feature adjusts yardages to account for uphill or downhill shots, so you can easily select the correct club for the situation at hand.
And with Touch Targeting, you can simply touch any point on the map for a precise measurement to that exact spot. Including fairways, bunkers, water hazards and much more.
Reaching the Pin
Once you are on your final approach shot, the Green View gives you a clear and true representation of the green shape from wherever you ae on the course. And, provided the information is given by the Club, the Approach S60 will even place the flag in the correct position of the day, for greater accuracy. The PinPointer even tells you the direction to take to the pin, should you approach from a blind spot.
Play with other golfers
Using the Garmin Golf App, you can compete with other golfers or see how you fare against your friends.
Each of the 40,000 courses, has its own weekly leaderboard for anyone to participate in, or you can set up your own tournament and invite players to compete. With the Approach S60 you can see your scores pushed to the leaderboard live as you complete your round.
A Smart timepiece that connects you to your game, and life
The Approach S60 is not just another great golf GPS watch. Sync it to your compatible smartphone to get notifications for incoming calls, texts, emails plus other alerts that you may have set up on your phone.
You can connect in more ways to, including the Garmin Golf App, which allows you to compete on leaderboards with friends on any one of the 40,000 preloaded golf courses. Download custom watch face designs, apps and widgets from Garmin’s Connect IQ store, and cutomise the watch face with photos from your mobile device using the Face It app.
Stay Active On and Off the Course
The Garmin Approach S60 will keep you informed for ages. With up to 10 hours of battery life while golfing – or up to 10 days in watch mode – your Approach S60 is sure to keep up with you.
In fact, use for more than just golfing with preloaded activity profiles for running, cycling, swimming and more. And with activity-tracking features, including the move bar, vibration alerts, calories and steps, the Garmin S60 will help you stay fit, day in and day out.
What We Loved About this Watch
There are so many features with this watch that it was hard to even scratch the surface, but there were some great features that warrant a special mention, as they really had my playing partners ‘green’ with jealousy.
At my home course there are a couple of blind Par 3’s and a short, drivable Par 4. Being able to not only know the yardages to the front, centre and back of the greens, but also to automatically account for the elevation, was a real bonus. Not only did the Approach S60 help me achieve my first Eagle on our Par 4 16th, but it also helped me, with it’s PinPoint technology, select the right club at the blind Par 3 8th, securing me a nice little birdie for 4 points!
With the lovely clear, full colour display, the GreenView was a delight when playing approach shots. Not only were the distances useful to the green, but you also have the ability to view hazards so you can select the right club to carry them.
In our club stableford comp, I didn’t really see the point of the real-time analysis although the scoring feature would be great when playing a social round with some mates.
Finally, the Garmin S60 Golf Watch is just a nice, stylish watch, so I loved the fact that it looked good on my wrist off the course too. And with the Garmin Connect phone app, you can change the face of the watch to suit your mood or clothes, almost as easily as you can the straps.
